First Walk

Today, I went for my first training walk.
It was a mild day, so I took advantage of that and set out for an hour of peace. Well, peace with a bit of Guns and Roses Appetite for Destruction, a little Offspring and lots of The Guess Who.
In any event, I set out and decided I would walk to the home of one of the ladies who has inspired me to do this walk in the first place. She lives on the South end of Town, and it's a lovely stroll through the downtown.
Today's walk was 6K, I think that's a good first day!

Who, What, When, Where and Why?

Please allow me to introduce myself. Most of you reading this already know me, but if I have picked up any body who does not, first Thanks! and second, here we are.

My name is Crystal. I have just turned 31, and I have committed to participating in the Shopper's Drug Mart Weekend to End Breast Cancer Walk in Sept 2011. This walk takes place in Toronto, Ontario. I registered in September 2010 with my heart, soul and mind, and am now registering with my body. I will be walking with a very good friend that asked me to join her team, a request I will forever be grateful for. I will also be joined by two other lovely ladies, one who I've known for a few years and she is a wonderful lady, and the other I have yet to meet in person but I can tell she is also a fantastic lady and I am excited and proud to be part of this team.

I am walking because it is a cause that I am extremely passionate about. I also believe that the funds raised will be used in a manner that is worthwhile of your donations. Millions of dollars are raised in a single weekend, that is so powerful, and I am so happy to be part of this.

Here are my reasons:

For my daughter, who is 4, for a future free of the worries of Breast Cancer and other Women's Cancers. So that she never has to lose a friend, or family member to it.

One of my dearest friends "B" is currently battling recurrent breast cancer... a young mom with children, a young woman with a wonderful husband, a sweet little family. She is strong and beautiful. She is still the first to raise her hand to help a friend in need, even if she is on the couch after another round of chemo. She has an attitude that is fierce, a sharp wit, and a determination that astounds me. She seems so indestructible but I also know she is a sweet, wonderful soul.

My Grammie, a strong British lady, was able to battle breast cancer and win. I am so proud of her. Despite being nearly 85 at the time, and also being a widow, she took on her opponent with all the ferocity of a woman 1/2 her age, and she is now in remission.

My husband's Aunt, also battled breast cancer, and won. Another strong lady, with a long battle, but she made it, so proud of her too!

And last but certainly not least, my friend "J" who also won the fight against breast cancer. Another young mom who endured a hell I cannot imagine.

Cancer in any form is a cowardly, mean and despicable opponent. It doesn't fight fair. Even the most talented and courageous fighters can still fall in this battle. I am walking to help give those fighters a better chance... and in the hope that eventually Cancer will be conquered.
